Zhongshan Road is the historic arcade street at the heart of Haikou's Qilou Old Street area, lined with old buildings that preserve the feel of a 19th-century trading port. It is a flat, easy walk and works well as part of a longer stroll through the surrounding old streets.
Getting There
From Jiucun Primary School, walk about 167 metres to Meiyuan Road Junction and take bus 29 for 2 stops, getting off at Haikou Fire Control Centre. Walk about 66 metres to the Provincial Library, transfer to bus 58, ride 7 stops to Qiongshan Guesthouse, then walk about 31 metres to reach Zhongshan Road.
Bus routes Qiongshan 1 and Qiongshan 3 also pass through Zhongshan Road, and visitors can use them to reach the arcade old street area.
What to See and Do
A suggested route starts in the morning with a walk to the Haikou Qilou Art Museum to see the permanent exhibition on the ground floor, then continues along Zhongshan Road to explore the surrounding old buildings and the retained 19th-century commercial-port atmosphere. The street links easily on foot with the Bell Tower, Bo'ai North Road and Shuixiangkou.
The whole street is flat and easy to walk, making it suitable for a relaxed outing with older visitors and for study-oriented visits.
Zhongshan Road has a traditional coconut carving workshop where skilled craftspeople teach children to make small coconut carving items by hand, and the finished pieces can be taken home — a good hands-on experience for families.
Local Tea Experience
While exploring the arcade old street, visitors can stop at Shangnantang on Zhongshan Road to try new-style partridge tea drinks, including cold-brewed tea and osmanthus partridge tea, which give the traditional Hainan tea a modern twist.
